What is bush kindy and why we do it every week

Every Wednesday, rain or shine, our Pre-Kindy children head out to Jackadder Lake for bush kindy. Three hours of unstructured outdoor learning. No iPad, no plastic resources, just children and the natural environment.

The research is convincing. Children who experience regular outdoor learning show stronger gross motor skills, more sustained focus, and more confident risk assessment. They climb higher, fall less, and recover faster when they do fall.

Bush kindy isn’t a free-for-all. Educators come with intent — observation jars, magnifiers, a story planned for under the big paperbark. But the day belongs to the children. If they want to spend two hours building a stick city, we let them.

Parents often ask about the weather. We have wet weather gear for everyone and a strict ‘no electrical storms’ policy. Cold, drizzle, wind — all part of it. The children rarely notice.
